James Gilstrap - Love Talk (1976)

Jim Gilstrap is better known as a backup singer, but Stevie Wonder fans might know him for singing the first verse of “You Are The Sunshine Of My Life”, which also makes him the first voice you hear on the epic Talking Book.
His name appears on tons of albums.
You can see a partial list of his session credits here , where you can see that he was very busy in the 1970s, working in the worlds of rock, soul, jazz, and funk.
The fact that Gene Page did the arranging on this record is also worth noting. This album, which has never appeared on CD, is a nice, short set of soulful disco-funk, and the mellow version of Todd Rundgren’s “Hello, It’s Me” has me wondering if Prince ever covered the song on solo piano.

Touch Of Class - Touch Of Class (1979)

Touch of Class was an American soul and R&B musical group from Philadelphia featuring four members: the brothers Gerald Jackson and Pete Jackson, as well as Herbert Brevard and Michael Hailstock. The band was active from the mid-1970s until mid-1980s recording for Midland International Records and affiliated RCA label and had a hit with their debut "I'm in Heaven" reaching #65 on Billboard Hot 100. It was also the title of their debut studio album. By 1979, Michael Hailstock had left to concentrate on songwriting and the band turned into a trio.
Their second album, the self-titled Touch of Class included their version of "Turn the Beat Around", a song written by Gerald and Pete Jackson and recorded by Vicki Sue Robinson in 1976 that gained big recognition and a big hit for her. the song is considered a dance/disco classic. It was also re-recorded by Laura Branigan in 1990 and by Gloria Estefan in 1994.

Besides their own work, the Jacksons did background vocals and studio work, mostly for Clarence Burke, Jr. of The Invisible Man's Band and The Five Stairsteps. Touch of Class made a comeback with the release of their 2014 cd Back to the Future on Libra Brothers Music. In 2005 Hamp Dickerson became the newest member of the group.

Brothers Pete and Gerald Jackson had enjoyed some earlier success as songwriters – their breakthrough coming when Vicki Sue Robinson covered ‘Turn the Beat Around‘.

The resulting  publicity may well have helped the Jacksons score a recording contract as members of the Philadelphia-based Touch of Class.
Arranged, conducted and produced by John Davis with support from the Salsoul Orchestra, 1976’s cleverly titled “I’m In Heaven” offered up a modest mixture of old school soul and more dance oriented tracks.

Over the next three years the group continued recording for Midland, though they enjoyed little in the way of success .

Sly Stone - Ten Years After Too Soon (1979)

Remix albums became quite common in the 1980s, but when Epic released this collection of Sly & the Family Stone remixes in 1979, the concept was still relatively new.
Ten Years Too Soon takes several of Stone's major hits (most of them from the late 1960s) and tries to make them relevant to the disco scene of 1979.
Many rock journalists cried foul and denounced this LP as cheap, shameless exploitation on Epic's part.
As they saw it, Epic was committing musical blasphemy by tampering with great works of art that shouldn't have been tampered with.
However, you have to take into consideration the bias of those critics; they hated disco in general and were determined to condemn this LP even before they heard it. It's true that the original versions of classics like "Sing a Simple Song," "Dance to the Music," "Everyday People," and "Stand!" were the best -- you cannot improve upon perfection, and the songs certainly didn't need remixer John Luongo to validate them.
But the club-minded makeovers that Luongo provides are, for the most part, tastefully done, even though they aren't as exciting as the originals.
And in all fairness, Luongo isn't trying to improve Stone's hits; he's simply putting his own spin on them.
If you're a Sly Stone fan who also has a taste for disco and dance-pop, you'll find Luongo's work on this LP to be mildly intriguing, if uneven and less than essential.

Rare Silk - New Weave (1983)

The Grammy nominated debut album of Rare Silk, turned out to be the best vocal jazz record of the eighties, still a pleasure to listen. With high-class musicians including Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker and Ronnie Cuber backing up their exceptional vocal performance, original lyrics written for instrumental pieces and fantastic vocal arrangements, Rare Silk created a collectible rare gem with “New Weave”.
The interpretation of Stanley Turrentine’s “Sugar” is probably the best version of this song.

It boggles my mind why the jazz vocal group Rare Silk is not still together and recording. And furthermore, why they are not international stars. The quality of voice, the vocal and instrumental arrangements are glorious. I can, and have listened to "New Weave" countless times beginning in the 80's when I first bought it as an LP. This is a classic pure and simple. Right up there with the crystalline jazz interpretations and expressions of the great Bill Evans.
